$2 Maternity Pants!

PREGNANCY. The only time it's "cute" to gain weight.

Well, FOR ME - it's awkward, because I outgrow all my normal pants, but I'm still too small to fit in normal maternity clothes sizes...but too big to fit in the petite sizes? It's just a struggle. Not to mention the fact that maternity clothes are outrageously expensive, anyway.

The obvious solution is to pull out the scissors and make your own!

What I used:
Thrifted Jeans
$2 Tank Top for fabric
THIS tutorial!

I tried to stick with jeans that had a bit of a stretch and rode mid-rise on the waist. It's probably a good idea to choose a pair of pants that has pockets to cut out!

GO TO TOWN. I tried to cut as close to the seam as possible, but I knew I'd end up with a few raw edges. Aim for practicality, not perfection! You'll have to turn the pants inside-out to cut out the pockets completely.

I couldn't find any elastic wide enough to cover the pocket hole, so I doubled over my knit tank top and used the old pocket as a guide (adding seam allowance!) The original tutorial suggests doubling over the size of the pocket, but the results from my first test run were reeeeaaallly wonky. So keep it roughly the same size if you're used stretchy knit fabric!

It's important to pin your knit insert in-line with the top of the jean waistband. Just to keep it looking complimentary!

The great thing about this project is that I could hide all my stitches using the pre-existing hem from my jeans. Sneaky!

AND TADA! All done. This is a 15 week belly, but there's still plenty of stretch to last a few more months. I was so happy with how comfy they were.

Some of the edges are funky looking, but since I don't plan on tucking in any shirts, I'm not too worried. ;)

The best part of this project is that it literally takes about fifteen minutes and it's easy enough for anyone to DIY. And $2 is well spent if it means COMFY and PRACTICAL maternity clothes that fit (and are cute!) I'm kicking myself for not doing this the first time around with Ella!

  1. Love your creativity and thriftyness! Also, I meant to commnet how inspired I was by your entry way decor! :)

And, if it isn't too nosy ... are you expecting again? If so, how very happy I am!

    1. Thank you! And yes, babe #2 is arriving sometime late January next year!

  2. This is such a great maternity hack! I'm definitely going to try this next time I'm pregnant! I tried to talk myself into using one of the tutorials where you cut a half circle out of the front of your jeans, to accommodate your belly, but I was worried I'd cut too much and ruin them. This seems much safer. 😉

  3. Wow! It looks nice. Never would have noticed that you remake it. Great job on this! Now all the pregnant women who wants to still wear their jeans can do this.
